Shanghai Institute of Quality and Standardization (SIS), founded in 1984, is a non-profit organization committed to research, service and application in the fields of quality and standardization. Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision (SMBQTS) is the superior authority of SIS. SIS takes active roles as the secretariats of National Technical Committee on Exhibition and Convention (SAC/TC 348), Subcommittee on Third Party Logistics Service of National Technical Committee on modern Logistics (SAC/TC 269/SC 3), and Subcommittee on Maturity Assessment of National Technical Committee on Project Management (SAC/TC 343/SC 1). SIS is also in charge of Shanghai Branch of Article Numbering Center of China.

SIS has established several specialized standardization institutions in such fields as public service and management, and modern logistics, which are engaging in the development of standards in the fields of quality research and key service sectors, and bringing the research achievements into application. SIS has been providing public service on both domestic and foreign standards information, based on the planned standards collection system and the information system which takes lead in China. SIS is committed to the promotion of application of article numbering and automatic identification technology. SIS hosts the periodical Quality and Standardization, and has been conducting professional training and knowledge dissemination in the fields of quality and standardization.

Focusing on the two strategies for science & technology development and talent management, by adhering to the public service as the basis, the innovation and scientific development as the orientation, and the professional brand building as the core task, SIS has been committed to establishing and maintaining itself as the front-running soft science research base of quality and standardization, so as to provide persistent technical support for national economy and social development. In the past few years, plentiful research achievements have been made and a few honors have been awarded to SIS, such as Shanghai Science and Technology Advancement Prize, AQSIQ Prize of scientific development of Inspection and Quarantine. SIS has also won and kept for years the honorary titles: Shanghai Municipal Model Unit and Shanghai Municipal Peace Demonstration Unit.
